Taipei - A Russian professor teaching at a Taiwan university has committed suicide, probably due to chronic depression, police said on Sunday.

Vasily Kryukov, 46, associate professor at Tamkang University outside Taipei, leapt from the window of his ninth-floor apartment about 7 pm local time Saturday in Tamsui Town near his university, a duty officer from the Tamsui Police Bureau said.

The apartment building's security guard heard a big sound when Kryukov fell to the ground and rushed him to hospital, but he died before reaching the hospital.

Police found anti-depression pills in Kryukov's rented apartment, and is probing if he committed suicide due to depression or work pressure.

Kryukov is one of the six Russian professors in the Russian Language Department of Tamkang University.

Kryukov came to Taiwan in 2004 to teach Russian literature at Tamkang University. He held a doctor of science degree from Russia's Institute of Oriental Studies, and has written several books on Russian literature.
