WATERBURY, Conn. -- Police arrested a suspended school principal on burglary and weapons charges Monday night after officers said he was caught stealing from the elementary school where he had worked.

David Macharelli, 53, of Naugatuck, was found at Rotella Interdistrict Magnet School loading boxes into a trailer attached to his Jeep, police told the Republican-American of Waterbury. He had been prohibited from returning to the magnet school.

Superintendent David Snead said the arrest could jeopardize an upcoming hearing about Macharelli's future with the district.

The boxes were originally suspected to contain school supplies, but police would not confirm their contents late Monday night.

When police frisked Macharelli, they found a stun gun and a folding knife, Police Chief Neil O'Leary told the newspaper.

Macharelli was charged with first-degree burglary, carrying a dangerous weapon and attempted sixth-degree larceny. He was being held on $250,000 bail.

Macharelli was suspended in June, after he was charged with shoplifting sneakers from a downtown Waterbury mall. He was granted accelerated rehabilitation in that case, meaning the case could be dismissed if no new charges are filed within a year.

Macharelli was also suspended for three days this spring for allegedly yelling and threatening parents after finding damage to the magnet school's auditorium after a production of "Annie."

Macharelli, who has been a Waterbury educator for 31 years, has said he is being treated for depression and his medication is to blame for his erratic behavior.
