(2/28/03) ? A Precinct Four constable shot a man who allegedly threatened authorities and his family with a knife overnight.
The man was shot in the hip and is recovering at Northeast Memorial Hospital. Authorities say the man was on anti-depressant medication and was also drinking. They say he posed enough of a threat, so they had to shoot him.
It all happened around midnight. His wife called out constables to the man's Atascocita home. She told officers her 31-year-old husband had a knife and he had become violent.
She told authorities she and her kids were trapped outside in their car and that she was worried because her husband was on anti-depressant medication and he had been drinking.
Deputy constables showed up and tried to negotiate with the man, who by this time was standing outside the garage waving the knife.
"Several of the officers spoke with him for several minutes, trying to get him to disarm," said Precinct Four Constable Ron Hickman. "Paramedics were on the scene after several attempts to get him to disarm. He lunged at the officers, at which time one of the officers discharged his weapon, striking him on the side."
The suspect is in stable condition and officials say his injuries are not life-threatening.
