Tuesday, October 14, 2008, 08:00

A CHELTENHAM Town football supporter has been banned from games for three years.

Darren Williams has to keep out of a zone around Whaddon Road when the Robins are playing at home and is also banned from going to any town or city in England or Wales where the team have an away fixture.

The 41-year-old is also not allowed to go anywhere England and Wales are playing.

Williams, who is from Windmill Park, Coventry, and has supported Cheltenham Town since 1999, was given the banning order at Cheltenham Magistrates' Court yesterday.

He had previously pleaded guilty to using threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour or disorderly behaviour at a Robins versus Swindon Town fixture on August 16.

The court heard he swore at Swindon fans outside the ground when drunk. He swore again after being warned by police and was arrested.

Williams had drunk four or five pints of lager after arriving in Cheltenham to go to the game but had been refused entry as he was too drunk.

It heard Williams had also been spotted by police at a Northampton game on August 9 after he had been refused entry for being drunk.

Tim Burrows, defending, said: "He readily accepts that he does drink too much and he is on antidepressants."

Problems arose when he the two were mixed together.

Magistrates' imposed the three-year banning order, which also says Williams must tell the Chief Constable of Gloucestershire if he moves house.

For the offence on August 16 he was given a conditional discharge of 24 months and ordered to pay costs of £60.
