Officials say former Macon teen's death not caused by 'choking game'

The Gwinnett County Medical Examiner's Office ruled Tuesday that a former Macon teenage girl died by suicide not related to "the choking game."

Ted Bailey, chief forensic investigator for Gwinnett County, said 13-year-old Elizabeth Pryor of Duluth, who died in mid-January from hanging, was suffering from depression. Bailey said Pryor was being treated in therapy for depression and was on medication. He also said she had told her friends on more than one occasion she had contemplated suicide.

No suicide note was found at the scene, but Bailey said that wasn't unique.

"Nationwide, notes are only left about 20 percent of the time," he said. "It's not really unusual to not have a note in a suicide case."

Some of Pryor's relatives had been contending that she died while playing "the choking game," a trend among young people who seek a euphoric high by temporarily cutting off oxygen to their brain.
