ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. -- Family members of 30-year-old Dominic Smith said police have been in contact with them about Thursdays robbery that ended with Smith dead.

Police said Smith robbed prescription drugs from the Walgreens Thursday off Coors Boulevard and Sequoia Road.

He threatened a pharmacy clerk with a note demanding prescriptions medication, took the drugs, then ran from police, investigators said.

While running from the scene, Smith was shot and killed by APD officer Jacob Welch.

"I can't even take it no more. I can't believe he was shot. Why couldn't they done something different," said Margaret Ann Saiz, Smith's mother.

Saiz said her son left a voice mail in the seconds leading up to the shots.

"All we hear on the phone, it's a silence for a few seconds and then you hear the two gunshots, and then you hear a silence again, and then you hear my son fall on the floor," said Saiz.

Family members said Smith had been taking pain medication as well as anxiety and depression medication and became addicted.

They said doctors recently cut him off the meds, and the withdrawal triggered the robbery.
