A DEPRESSED Sheffield man was killed when he was hit by a bus after leaving hospital following an overdose, an inquest heard.

Nicholas Owen's former partner Tina Shockness hugged the bus driver at the inquest and said: "Please be ok, don't blame yourself."

Mr Owen, aged 49, who lived at Fox Hill Crescent, Fox Hill, with his partner and their two children, was due to go to Sheffield
Wednesday's match on Boxing Day 2009 but Ms Shockness couldn't wake him up.

He was rushed to the Northern General and it emerged he had taken a whole box of anti-depressants.

The next day he left the ward and went to Barnsley Road before stepping in front of a double-decker bus.

Despite the quick reactions of the bus driver, he was unable to avoid Mr Owen, who died minutes later.

Pathologist Doctor Kim Suvarna recorded Mr Owen's cause of death as thorasic blood force trauma due to being in contact with a moving vehicle.

Assistant Deputy Coroner Julian Fox, who recorded a verdict of suicide, said: "It is clear to me that medical staff could not have done any more than they did and the driver should feel no blame for what happened."

Mr Owen first became depressed after the death of his father in 2004, the inquest heard.
