A man who shot and killed his mother and her husband in their northwest Harris County home and then himself Friday killed his ex-wife at a Waco grocery hours earlier on Thursday -- exactly one year after their divorce, authorities said
The gunman's 15-year-old half-sister called 911 about 3 a.m. from the parents' home in the 6000 block of Spring Creek Grove Lane, and deputies arrived to find Barbara McGee, 50, and her husband, John, 39, dead.

Stephen Read, 26, Barbara McGee's son by a previous marriage and who had a history of psychological problems, was found after slashing his wrists and shooting himself in the head, authorities said.

He died shortly after arrival at Hermann Hospital.

Waco police said Read was suspected of killing his ex-wife, Shawna Gayle Brown, 22, about 10:30 p.m. Thursday before driving about 145 miles to his parents' home in Spring.

Minutes after getting off work at an H.E.B. Pantry Foods store in Waco, Brown was found shot in the head on the parking lot.

Waco police said the shell casing found near her were of the same brand and caliber of those found at Read's parents' house, and witnesses said they saw a car matching the size, make and color of Read's auto found in Spring.

Read, who lived in Waco, had suffered emotional problems in the past and was supposed to be taking anti-depressant medication, Harris County detectives learned. They were also told he had recently expressed a great deal of anger toward his mother and her husband.

Detectives said Read apparently drove from Waco to his mother's house and she let him inside.

Detectives said it appeared he first shot his mother, whose body was found in the living room, then his stepfather, who was found in the master bath. He used a .380-caliber semi-auto matic pistol, detectives said.

The half-sister had told emergency dispatchers her father and mother had been shot and that the gunman was still in the house. She then hid, according to officers, who said they had to force their way into the home.

Read "had been trying to get back with (his ex-wife) and reconcile, but she had continually refused," Waco police Sgt. Malissa Sims said.

"He was on antidepressant drugs," Harris County homicide Sgt. Danny Billingsley said. "He had quite of bit of anger and felt like, I guess, that he'd never been done right.
