18-Year-old Assaulted Former Boyfriend At Bar

An 18-year-old Sarnia woman who pled guilty to assaulting her former boyfriend in the stairwell of a downtown Sarnia bar was granted a conditional discharge Tuesday and placed on 12 months probation.

The assault took place April 15 at 10:30 p. m. when the victim exited the bar through a back stairway, stopping on the bottom landing to have a cigarette and make a call from his cell phone, assistant Crown attorney Lyndon McFalls told court.

The former girlfriend was waiting outside and approached the victim as he finished the call. She began yelling and throwing punches, striking the victim in the back of the head and causing him to black out.

The pair were separated by bar staff and the incident captured on a video security system.

McFalls said the victim later went to hospital to have his injuries treated.

Defence lawyer James Guggisberg asked the court to consider a conditional discharge with a recommendation his client receive counselling, saying she works two jobs and was taking antidepressant medication at the time of the incident.

Guggisberg also asked the court to take into account a previous history between the two and the fact the victim had invited his client to the bar and said "something ungentlemanly" to her before she lashed out.

Prior to being sentenced by Justice Mark Hornblower, the girl told the court she had stopped taking her medication about a week prior to the incident and was unaware she couldn't just stop taking it.

As a condition of probation, Hornblower ordered the woman to enrol in the Commitment to Change Program, and any other counselling as directed by her probation officer.
