A father of four had meticulously planned his own suicide an inquest heard yesterday (Thursday, June 17), writes Mat Beech.


Joseph Phoenix took his own life with a homemade helium mask and was found after he notified the policein an email.


The 46-year-old made the mask from a plastic bag, a head band and tubing linked to a helium bottle, starving himself of oxygen.


The body was found at his home address in Barrier Road, Chatham in November last year the inquest in County Hall, Maiidstone was told.


The self-diagnosed bi-polar sufferer had been on anti-depressant medication after revealing he had planned his suicide to the smallest detail, including attempts not to upset his family and to ensure his body wasn’t found until he had completed his actions.


A detailed email was sent to Kent Police, issuing the location of the body within the apartment, as well as information on keys and a letter detailing the next of kin.


Coroner Roger Sykes ruled that Mr Pheonix took his own life while suffering from a debilitating mental illness.
