Barman headbutted police car, court hears

A BARMAN assaulted a police officer before head-butting the bonnet of a squad car in a bid to resist arrest, a court heard.

James White, 22, of Thackams Farm and Mattingley, Hook, lost control after a fight broke out at the Cricketers pub in Hartley Wintney on August 28.

Last Thursday White, a barman at the pub who was not working at the time, appeared at Aldershot Magistrates’ Court and pleaded guilty to two counts of assault by beating and one count of assault with intent to resist arrest.

He also admitted a further charge of criminal damage.

Prosecutor Serena Edwards said White was sitting with pub regulars during a charity event on the night of the row.

A different member of staff, who was working that night, asked one of the drinkers who White was with to leave and for the rest of the group to keep their voices down, the court was told.

White got angry and poured the contents of his glass over his colleague.

When the police were called, they found White in a cubicle of the men’s toilets where he was arrested.

Miss Edwards said that White struggled and told officers he was not going anywhere.

The court heard that after being handcuffed, White was abusive to the police officer and dropped to the ground and refused to stand up.

He hit the officer’s shoulder, causing him to fall back onto the wall of the toilet, Miss Edwards said.

When White was taken outside, he head-butted the bonnet of the police car three to four times, causing a dent.

When interviewed, White admitted that he had bought a pint of beer and a whisky and coke from the bar and drank with the regulars.

He said that there was a disagreement in the pub and accepted he had poured his pint over one of the members of staff.

Miss Edwards said that his behaviour was alcohol related.

The cost of the damage to the police car was estimated at £1,056 and magistrates were given photos of the affected vehicle.

Defence solicitor Emma Charlton, explained to the court that White was currently at college studying for his A-Levels.

He had a history of suffering from anxiety, depression and panic attacks, she said.

He had been taken medication for these since an early age and saw a psychiatrist and psychologist for help.

Court chairman Michael Bristow, decided to adjourn the hearing so that White could meet with the probation team so a full report on his health problems could be fed back to the court.

He was released on conditional bail until he appears back in Aldershot Magistrates Court on October 11.

The one condition of his bail was that he could not drink alcohol in a public place.
