Mother Emma Hart killed five-year-old son to spite his father

By Rod Chaytor 1/08/2008

A depressed and jealous mother killed her son to spite his father before committing suicide, an inquest heard yesterday.

Emma Hart, 27, force-fed Lewis Dangerfield, five, a lethal cocktail of painkillers and antidepressants before slashing her wrists the next day.

She left a gloating note for expartner Shaun Dangerfield beside Lewis' body, which read: "Did you think I was going to die and allow you to bring Lewis up and play happy families?

"You made your choice, now you can live with it. You can hurt for the rest of your life.

"I told you I would make you pay. Enjoy your life now. Nothing is stopping you. Ha ha ha. Just remember, it's all your fault."

Mr Dangerfield broke down as it was read in court and had to leave. Coroner Robin Balmain said it was the most distressing case he had ever dealt with.

He said: "Emma Hart left a note which was severely critical of Mr Dangerfield. I have heard no evidence to justify that view. She couldn't get her way and maybe was driven by jealousy. I can't imagine something quite so evil. She was prepared to kill her son to spite him."

He recorded a verdict of suicide on Emma, who had also taken lethal doses of morphine, painkillers and antidepressants, and unlawful killing on Lewis.

Giving evidence, Mr Dangerfield, 27, said Emma, from Tipton, West Mids, was troubled and often violent during their fouryear on-off relationship and had threatened suicide.

She was also unhappy about him being with his new partner.

Last December, she rang one Friday to cancel his weekend with Lewis, saying she was taking him to see Santa - then killed him. On Saturday afternoon she went to mother Lynn's home and said Lewis was with his father. At 7pm Lynn found her in bed covered in blood.

A note read: "I'm so sorry for taking Lewis and me away. I can't take it anymore."

In a statement, Mr Dangerfield said: "Being told the exact reasons as to how he was murdered won't bring him back, but does bring it to an end."

Lynn told the Smethwick inquest: "She was not a horrible person, she was a loving mum
