Bald Britney now lying low
Weekend frenzy has fans, friends worried
BY KAREN THOMAS | USA TODAY
Even by Britney Spears standards, this weekend packed a wallop.
The pop star, 25, was lying low Sunday after creating a media frenzy by shaving her head.
Video of Spears' mother, Lynn, in Los Angeles Saturday shows her giving a thumbs-up sign when asked if Spears was OK. But the singer has not been spotted since she was photographed and videotaped Friday night in an L.A. hair salon, where she shaved off her hair. Afterward, she got a new tattoo.
Salon owner Esther Tognozzi tells Us Weekly that after Spears' hair was gone, the singer "looked in the mirror and said with tears in her eyes, 'My mom is going to be so upset with me.' " Tognozzi says that before her head was shaved, Britney complained that her extensions were "very tight and uncomfortable."
She also showed up Friday in a tattoo parlor in the San Fernando Valley with tiny tattoos on the back of her neck.
"She just wanted something real small on her wrist, something dainty," Max Gott, the tattoo artist at Body and Soul in Sherman Oaks, said. "She got some cute little lips on her wrist."
Says Derrik Snell, who works at the tattoo parlor, "She seemed fine. I didn't really notice (the hairdo) at first, she had a hood on when she showed up."
Spears' camp has made no comments since reports erupted Friday afternoon that she had checked into Crossroads Centre, a rehab clinic on the Caribbean island Antigua and left shortly afterward.
When child stars grow up, it's not uncommon to see "rebellious behaviors of a 15-year-old," says L.A. therapist Terence McPhaul, author of "The Celebrity Psyche."
The reason: They never had the time during their teen years to form their own identities. They are so often used to being handled "that when they want to break away, they aren't capable of making adult decisions."
McPhaul says the quick stop at a rehab may mean Spears isn't struggling with drug and alcohol dependency. Rather, she has "bigger adjustment issues that have never been addressed. Two marriages, an annulment, a divorce and two children are a lot with no break in between, says McPhaul. "Has anyone considered she may be suffering from postpartum depression?"
Rehab specialist Michael Cartwright says that "some mental illness may be going on." The CEO of Malibu's The Canyo at Pearce Park suggest Spears' head-shaving could be a sign of a bipolar disorder. "People who have mental health issues can't be helped with a 12-step program alone. Therapy, medication and other measures are needed to deal with the emotional and psychological issues."
Spears has been front-page fodder for gossip weeklies since she filed for divorce in November from Kevin Federline. The mother of two apologized to fans in January after she was pinged for a nightclubbing spree that made headlines when she was photographed wearing no panties. "I know I've been far from perfect," she wrote on her Web site, which has been taken down for redesign.
Last week, amid reports that Spears was clubbing through Manhattan, a letter from her former assistant Felicia Culotta was posted on That Other Blog. "I am crushed/saddened/heart sick by the way her life is unfolding," wrote Culotta, who worked with Spears for nearly 10 years. "Her Family and nearest and dearest ... are doing EVERYTHING in our power to get help for Britney."

There was a bottle of Paxil (an antidepressant) and a bottle of Xanax (for anxiety) that she took out and put on the counter. It looked like a pharmacy in there.' "

Britney Spears has been enjoying her boozed panty-free nights out but is she also a pill popper? According to
In Touch weekly, Britney Spears dined at celebrity eatery Dan Tana's this week and was spotted leaving the joint with a glass of wine as she walked to her car. According to sources while Britney paid a visit to the ladies' room, where she plopped her purse down on the counter and in front of several witnesses opened her bag to reveal a bounty of pills inside.
One eyewitness told the magazine,
"There was a bottle of Paxil (an antidepressant) and a bottle of Xanax (for anxiety) that she took out and put on the counter. It looked like a pharmacy in there." The magazine also claims in their latest issue that Britney has allegedly been spending a lot of time in the rest rooms of clubs and after-hours parties lately. If you know that every move you make is watched or photographed, you’d think she would be a little more cautious…after all, this is Hollywood, news spreads like fire.
