CANON CITY A longtime chiropractor on Wednesday was sentenced to five years in prison for assaulting his ex-wife and her male friend with an aluminum baseball bat.
Larry Sutton, 62, pleaded guilty in April to a single count of second-degree assault. A burglary charge was dropped.
"He broke into a home he wasn't supposed to have a set of keys to the marriage had ended two years before," said District Attorney Thom LeDoux. "It was approximately midnight, he was armed with an aluminum baseball bat and came into the room swinging.
"He struck both of the victims several times before they could gain control of the bat," LeDoux said. "It was an extremely serious crime."
LeDoux said Sutton had been stalking his ex-wife and that wasn't the first time he had gotten into her home, although another incident was not reported to authorities.
"He submitted a 21-page handwritten missive that tries to justify his behavior blaming medication, alcohol and claims to have only accidently hit his ex-wife. There is no accountability," LeDoux said.

Judge David Thorson told Sutton he got, "A really good deal. It was a very serious offense and had you been convicted of the burglary I might well be sentencing you to 24 years in prison.
"What a shame, six decades of living a completely honorable life with a successful career, children and grandchildren that love you and in a matter of minutes you threw it all away," Thorson said. "Despite your apology, I think you remain a danger."
Sutton also was ordered to pay $1,220 in restitution.
