A Lake County man beat and raped his girlfriend early Sunday, left her at a hospital, then held off police for 2 1/2 hours in a home near Antioch before threatening to drown at least one of his children, authorities said.

Christopher Schnider, 36, of the 28000 block of Forest Avenue near Antioch, is charged with attempted murder, criminal sexual assault, aggravated domestic battery and unlawful restraint, said Lake County Sheriff Mark Curran.

Schnider tied up his girlfriend, 25, at their house, taped her mouth shut and sexually assaulted her, Curran said. He beat her with a baseball bat, breaking her arm and bruising her severely, Curran said. Schnider then drove her to Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with their four children, ages 3, 4, 6 and 7, Curran said.

"He did in fact dump her at Condell" and did not help her in to the emergency room, Curran said.

Hospital personnel called police, and sheriff's officers found Schnider on Illinois Highway 173 as he was heading home, Curran said. He refused to stop and drove to his brother's house in the 25000 block of West Edgar Avenue in Antioch Township around 8 a.m., authorities said.

Schnider kept sheriff's officers at bay for 21/2 hours as he talked to a negotiator and family members on a cell phone while hiding in the bathroom, Undersheriff Chuck Fagan said.

Schnider threatened to drown one or two of his children in the bathtub, and officers ran into the house using a Taser to subdue him, Fagan said. None of the children was hurt.

Schnider was taken to Vista Medical Center East in Waukegan for treatment, then was released to the sheriff's department, Curran said. He was taking two prescription drugs, a painkiller and an anti-depressant, that likely played a role in his actions Sunday, Fagan said.

He is being held in the Lake County Jail in lieu of $10 million bail set by Associate Judge Theodore Potkonjak.

The children were turned over to family members, and the Department of Children and Family Services is investigating, Curran said. The girlfriend was still hospitalized Monday, Curran said.
