Disclaimers offer no solace to those who mourn

October 1, 2009

RE “ 60 doctors took speaker fees from drug giant’’ (Page A1, Sept. 29): It was most distressing to read the article detailing pay-offs by Eli Lilly & Co. to doctors at Massachusetts hospitals for them to promote drugs such as Cymbalta. Especially since it was one year ago Tuesday that my husband died at Massachusetts General Hospital; cause of death listed on his death certificate: liver toxicity caused by Cymbalta.

He had been put on Cymbalta by his primary care physician in Rhode Island the first week in May 2008, and by the end of that month he had incurred irreversible liver damage. It took him four months to die.

Lilly and other drug companies like to cover themselves by including all kinds of disclaimers. But disclaimers offer no solace to those of us (and there must be many) who are left to mourn.

Physicians who accept money from the drug companies should be ashamed, or perhaps they could visit with victims’ families during our empty holidays.
