Inquest told Brierley Hill man hanged himself

10:56am Monday 25th July 2011

AN inquest has been told how a Brierley Hill man hanged himself after being overcome by anger and depression.

Andrew Woodhall, aged 19, was found unconscious by his girlfriend Tracey Murphy at the home they shared in High Street, Brockmoor, and, despite her attempts to revive him, was declared dead at Russells Hall hospital.

Black Country Coroner Robin Balmain heard how Mr Woodhall, a labourer, had been taking medication for his mental problems and had previously threatened suicide.

Ms Murphy, aged 23, said: “He was taking more medication than he was supposed to, he said one didn’t do anything.

“He would sit with a chord around his neck and hold it tight, he did that many times before.”

She described how, on the night he hanged himself with an electrical extension cable, they argued and Mr Woodhall went upstairs after pushing her onto a sofa.

After around 20 minutes she followed him and found a bedroom door jammed shut.

Ms Murphy, who now lives in Quarry Bank, pushed the door open and found Mr Woodhall with the chord around his neck.

She said: “I took it from round his neck then I panicked and rang my dad’s girlfriend who lived round the corner. I then rang an ambulance and they told me to give CPR.”

Mr Balmain concluded Mr Woodhall died on June 1 from injuries consistent with hanging and that he killed himself.

He said: “For whatever reason, Andrew chose to do this to himself, he was suffering considerable anguish at the time of his death
