Man accused of Costa home invasion 'set booby traps'

Updated May 4, 2011 17:14:00

A court has heard a man charged over a violent home invasion at the New South Wales rural property of former state Treasurer Michael Costa, had fortified his hide-out.

Mark Noel Sheehan of Kincumber on the New South Wales Central Coast was today refused bail by Magistrate Sharon Crews in Maitland Local Court.

The 39-year-old was yesterday arrested at a bushland campsite not far from the Costa family's rural home at Millfield and charged with two counts of aggravated break and enter.

Police say he forced his way into the home of Mr Costa, while his wife Deborah and two young children were there.

It is alleged Sheehan was armed with a knife when he tied Mrs Costa to a chair while her children watched on.

In refusing him bail, Magistrate Crews said the police "description of Sheehan's campsite is concerning".

The prosecution told the Court he had "fortified the campsite with booby traps" to keep people out.

Magistrate Crews told the Court, police facts allege Sheehan had Ms Costa's credit card in his wallet when they found him.

She also said bottles of wine, allegedly stolen from the house, were found at the campsite and in the Costa's car he is charged with stealing.

Magistrate Crews said it was also concerning he had been off his depression medication and has recommended he receive psychiatric medication before facing Newcastle Local Court on June 29.
