A man doused himself in petrol and then set himself on fire in front of his family an inquest heard today.

During a two-day inquest at the Guildhall in Windsor, the coroner heard how Amrik Singh Mann, of Warwick Avenue, Slough, died after igniting his clothes with a cigarette lighter on March 14 last year.

The incident happened in Birch Grove at 8am that morning in front of his family. The 36-year-old knocked on their door smelling of petrol and then held the flame to his body.

Berkshire coroner Peter Bedford heard how Mr Mann’s family tried to save him by covering him with blankets and spraying water, but despite their efforts he later died from burns and smoke inhalation.

Toxicology reports showed he had been drinking and had taken prescription medication at the time of his death.

A narrative verdict was recorded explaining the sequence of events that led to him setting himself on fire.
