PRESS-GAZETTE

Police said Monday that Keith Miles lured Katherine Majewski to his Western Avenue apartment Friday by telling her he was going to pay back money he owed her.

Instead, police believe, Miles, 22, beat and strangled her, leaving the body of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay freshman on the floor of his garage.

"She was a college student, and he owed her money," Lt. Jim Arts said in a news conference Monday. "She had gone there to collect the debt. It was a ruse. He used that to get her over there."

Both bodies were found about 4:40 p.m. Friday in the garage behind Colonial Pines Apartments, 1706 Western Ave.

Majewski and Miles had a short relationship, only weeks long, before breaking up, police said. She was trying to end the relationship, but he had different plans and at times stalked her, police said.

A suicide note Miles left indicated he planned to kill someone when he killed himself, Arts said. The note did not specify who that victim would be.

Miles used duct tape and a tube to flood the passenger compartment of his 1988 Chevrolet Beretta with exhaust. He died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Brown County Interim Medical Examiner Joe Grantham said evidence of blunt trauma on Majewski's head would not have been enough to kill her, but he added that the marks were consistent with an injury caused by a fist during a fight.

Majewski died of strangulation, but Grantham refused to speculate what was used to choke her. He did say there were ligature marks on the woman's neck.

Miles had a history of domestic abuse and was arrested for disorderly conduct July 29. He got in a fight with Hannah Lindbo, his live-in girlfriend, and pushed her against a fence and slapped her in the face, according to a criminal complaint filed in Brown County Court.

Miles also threatened to hurt a neighbor who intervened during the argument. In that incident, Miles pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor disorderly conduct charge-domestic violence offense and was sentenced Aug. 23 to 18 months' probation and 25 hours of community service.

During that proceeding - exactly a month before Majewski was killed - it was learned that Miles suffered from depression and was taking Zoloft, a prescription anti-depressant.
