A 49-year-old Norcross woman was shot in the stomach Monday after refusing to give a man a cigarette, police said.

According to police reports, Alex Yun, 26, of Loganville allegedly shot Maria del Rosario Lamy Hernandez at her Chelsea Park Village apartment around 3:30 p.m.

Hernandez was alone in the apartment when Yun allegedly knocked on her door and asked for a cigarette, said Cpl. Dan Huggins of the Gwinnett Police Department.

Hernandez responded that she was "Christian and did not smoke," the police report said. Yun allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot Hernandez twice in the abdomen, police said.

After being shot, Hernandez ran through the apartment and called police. Yun fled.

Yun, who Hernandez said was wearing a blue shirt and white pants, threw the gun in the woods near the apartment complex. He later returned to the woods, where he encountered police officers investigating the case.

"I assume he was there to try to recover the gun," Huggins said.

At the time of the shooting, Yun was under the influence of antidepressant medications for which he did not have a prescription, Huggins said. Yun is being charged with aggravated assault, aggravated battery, possession of drugs, and the commission of a crime.

He was carrying an unspecified quantity of antidepressant medicine at the time of his arrest, Huggins said.

Hernandez was taken to Gwinnett Medical Center where she was in stable condition.
