Suicide Confirmed In Death Of King
POSTED: 9:57 am EST February 19, 2004
HIGH POINT, N.C. -- An autopsy report on the body of the former director of a Greensboro non-profit agency said he died from an overdose of two antidepressants.
Suicide was listed as the cause of death for Michael Anthony King, 44, former executive director for Project Homestead Inc.
Citalopram is an antidepressant, and Buprorion is an anti-depressant prescribed for people trying to quit smoking, according to Internet information on the pharmaceuticals.
King was found dead by Rockingham County sheriff's deputies last December. His body was found in a mobile home near Belews Creek.
King resigned from Homestead in September amid mounting questions about its accounting and financial practices, particularly how it spent taxpayer money given to it by the city of Greensboro to build homes for low-income residents.
On Sept. 17, the day before the Project Homestead board voted to accept King's resignation, Greensboro police said they transported him to Wesley Long Hospital because of an apparent overdose of pills.
King later told congregants at the Garden of Prayer Baptist Church, which he founded in 1979, that he had since checked himself into a mental health facility. He also told the congregation that he was on medication.
Three lawsuits also have been filed against King alleging he coerced or tried to coerce Project Homestead employees into having sex. King strongly denied those allegations.
