Depression drove Carmarthen bank manager to suicide, inquest told

A CARMARTHEN bank manager killed himself whilst suffering from a depressive illness, an inquest heard.

Kenneth Mark Morris, 45, of High Street, Abergwili, was found hanged near the old railway line in Bronwydd Road, Carmarthen, on the afternoon of Sunday, March 13, by a passer-by.

In his statement, detective sergeant Ross Evans described the area the body was found in as "quite secluded."

Resuscitate

He added: "Efforts were made to resuscitate Mr Morris, but they were unsuccessful."

Mr Morris, who was known as Mark, was a manager at the King Street branch of Lloyds TSB in Carmarthen.

He is survived by his wife Delyth and teenage children Michael and Sara.

"He was a well-known local man, who was actively involved with sporting teams for many years," said Detective Sergeant Evans in his statement.

"He was known personally to me and I could identify him as a result."

A keen sportsman, Mr Morris was fond of cricket, rugby and football, with links to Carmarthen Wanderers and Carmarthen Athletic. He also coached the junior football team in Abergwili.

The inquest in Llanelli was told Mr Morris suffered from depression for some time prior to his death and was taking medication for it.

Carmarthenshire coroner John Owen said no suicide notes were found.

He added: "Mr Morris left home at 12.30pm that day in an agitated state. "His wife had offered to accompany him, but he said he wanted to go alone.

"At around 3.30pm his wife went to the police because she was concerned."

The location Mr Morris's body was found in was of personal significance as he regularly fished there with his son and had walked there with his dog.

The inquest heard the cause of death was hanging. Carmarthenshire Coroner John Owen recorded a verdict that Mr Morris killed himself whilst suffering from a depressive illness.
