CANTON

A second woman pleaded guilty Wednesday to her role in the drinking-related death of a former Marine from Alliance.

Stark County Common Pleas Judge Lee Sinclair sentenced Lori A. Osterland, 40, of 755 Wade Ave. in Alliance, to six months in jail on misdemeanor charges of negligent homicide and offenses involving underage persons.

Osterland is to start serving her sentence Friday. She initially faced a felony charge of involuntary manslaughter.

“What this says is we are our brother’s keeper and there is some responsibility there,” said defense attorney Wayne Graham.

Carri Goodwin, a 20-year-old former Marine, was found dead in a car in downtown Alliance during the early morning hours of Feb. 28, 2009. Tests performed by the Stark County coroner showed she had a blood-alcohol level of about 0.5 percent. By comparison, the state driving limit is 0.08 percent.

In the hours before her death, Goodwin had been drinking with her sister, Misty A. Goodwin, and Osterland.

Carri Goodwin had also taken a prescription antidepressant, according to toxicology results filed with the court.

Based on the defendants’ statements, at one point, Osterland and Misty Goodwin bought some liquor in Plain Township and met some guys. On the way back to Alliance, Carri Goodwin passed out in the back of the car, said Assistant Stark County Prosecutor Lewis Guarnieri.

Her sister and Osterland left her in the car while they continued drinking at the Towne Tavern in downtown Alliance.

Misty A. Goodwin, 22, of 1547 Wade Ave. in Alliance, pleaded guilty last week to the same charges.

She will be sentenced later this month.
