Council Bluffs Police investigators are hoping to talk with a Council Bluffs man who was shot by his father on Christmas night.

A spokesman for Creighton University Medical Center can't disclose the condition of Timothy Potter, 22. Council Bluffs Police Detective Dave Dawson said that the young man is awake and talking and that investigators hoped to meet with him sometime next week.

Timothy Potter suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the chest, stomach and lower face on the evening of Dec. 25. After shooting him, his father, Norman Potter, 49, of Council Bluffs, turned the gun on himself.

The incident occurred in the family's home at 1718 Ave. F.

Preliminary autopsy results indicated Norman Potter died of a "self-inflicted, single gun-shot wound to the chest," Dawson said.

Final autopsy results aren't expected for a few weeks.

The events that led up to the shooting are still under investigation, Dawson said.

"It appears he was supposed to be on some type of medication for depression and wasn't taking it," Dawson said. "He may have been taking something else, but we're waiting for toxicology results to determine that. He may have also been hallucinating prior to the incident that night."

Three guns were recovered from the scene, a shotgun and .32- and .38-caliber handguns, but Dawson said that only the .38-caliber gun was used in the shootings.

Paramedics tried to resuscitate Norman Potter at the scene of the shooting and as he was being transported to Alegent Health Mercy Hospital. The gunshot injury to his chest was fatal, however, and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Timothy Potter was taken in critical condition to CUMC where he is still undergoing treatment for his injuries.
