DEARBORN -- A Lincoln Park man who brandished a loaded shotgun and threatened to kill doctors at Dearborn's Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center before he was wrestled to the floor and disarmed is expected to be charged today with a felony in the city's district court.

Jeffery Allen Brown, 28, walked into the hospital lobby Thursday and yelled out that he planned to kill all doctors who performed abortions.

Hospital security guards inside the lobby area managed to tackle Brown and take away his pump shotgun before he could carry out his threat, police said.

The four unarmed guards were not hurt. Each had received training in subduing angry or dangerous people, the hospital's security chief, Ken Kessey, said.

The incident started at about 10:30 a.m. when Brown pulled up in a white Chrysler convertible at the lobby entrance. Police say he got out of the car, reached into the backseat to get the loaded shotgun, and stormed into the lobby.

He began yelling threats and calling doctors killers for performing abortions, police said.

The guards calmly walked up to him, grabbed the weapon and forced him to the floor.

Ironically, no abortions are performed at the hospital, said Dr. George Kazzi, chief of Oakwood's obstetrics and gynecology. He said Oakwood staff doctors last year delivered about 4,700 babies.

Oakwood "is committed to the sanctity of life," he said.

None of the hospital's 3,000 employees, including the four unarmed security guards, were hurt during the brief struggle.

Brown was arrested by Dearborn police and jailed at police headquarters. He'll be arraigned today before 19th District Judge William Holtgren on a felony charge of assault with intent to commit murder, police. He could face up to life in prison if found guilty.

"Everybody's just glad it's over," Oakwood spokeswoman Laurie Armstrong said.

Brown, a newspaper delivery driver, told police that a former girlfriend had undergone an abortion a few years ago, and he blamed doctors for the death of the child, a girl, said Dearborn Police Chief Ron Deziel.

Deziel said Brown following his arrest ranted about abortion and said "doctors are murderers who must be killed."

Deziel said Brown apparently suffers from depression and was treated with prescription medication. The chief said Brown lives with his parents.

"He has an obvious mental instability," Deziel said.

Michigan Right to Life spokeswoman Pamela Sherstad said her pro-life organization is against all forms of violence.

Brown's attack, however, shows that "many men are left out of the (abortion decision) process," she said.
