Aiello guilty on 10 counts
19-year-old shot at several houses, then fled Michigan

A St. Clair County jury found a 19-year-old Port Huron man guilty Tuesday of 10 felony charges for a March incident during which he fired a gun at several city houses and carjacked a taxi.

Donald James Aiello was arrested in Knoxville, Tenn., about a week after the shootings on Wells and Ward streets. His jury trial started Oct. 16. Jurors reached a verdict after several hours of deliberation.

Aiello was convicted on all but one of the charges he faced. Jurors decided to reduce a charge of assault with intent to murder to assault with intent to commit great bodily harm less than murder.

St. Clair County Senior Assistant Prosecutor Mary Roy Kelly said Aiello's defense was that he was under the influence of Cymbalta, an antidepressant, when the shootings happened.

"We challenged whether he was properly taking his medication," she said.

Police said Aiello used the taxi as a getaway car. They found it about five blocks away from where it was stolen but did not see Aiello.

Port Huron police Detective John Stuewer said it was an anonymous tip that sent police to Tennessee, where Aiello was arrested as he got off a bus.

As he left the courtroom Tuesday, Aiello looked at people sitting in the gallery and said he was sorry.
