The Tega Cay man authorities said fired multiple shots at police during a domestic violence incident that became a standoff pleaded guilty earlier this month to multiple charges and will serve a six-year sentence.
Steven Todd Campbell, 41, pleaded guilty to attempted murder, criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature and unlawful neglect of a child, 16th Circuit Public Defender Harry Dest said.
Each of the felony charges, Dest said, could have carried a combined 50-year prison sentence. Instead, a judge sentenced Campbell to six years in jail.
“He pleaded guilty but mentally ill, because of what he was going through that day,” Dest said. “Basically, he got a sentence of six years, where he’ll be out in five years and placed on probation.”
The charges against Campbell stemmed from a domestic incident that happened in November at his home, resulting in a hours-long standoff with authorities. Several shots were fired, narrowly missing an officer, authorities said.
Campbell originally faced five charges, but two counts of unlawful neglect of a child were dismissed, York County 16th Circuit Asst. Solicitor Lisa Collins said.

An argument between Campbell and his wife preceded her call to police, according to a police report. When the Tega Cay Police Department responded to the domestic disturbance call involving a man with a gun at a home on Golfview Crest, they were met at the door by the man’s wife. She yelled that her husband had a gun and locked himself in a room with the kids, according to the police report.
Three girls, all younger than age 6, were out of view until one of the girls ran out.
“The subject replied, ‘Get the hell out. Leave or I will kill you and everyone in here,” according to a police report.
Officer Andre Breeland wrote in the report that Campbell said he was armed and “he was going to shoot me in the head.” Moments later, a child rounded a corner, Breeland said, but a third child was not accounted for. Campbell, according to the report, threatened to use his weapon, a .45 caliber handgun, to “kill everyone in the house.”
Collins said Campbell didn’t have any criminal offenses prior to the incident.
Campbell remains in custody in South Carolina. His projected parole date is May 1, 2016, according to the S.C. Department of Corrections.
