Avoca man convicted of shooting officers

Prairie Du Chien An Avoca man has been convicted of shooting two law enforcement officers at a Muscoda salvage yard.

James Wardell, 39, was found guilty by a jury in Crawford County Circuit Court, where the trial had been moved from Grant County.

The man was convicted of three counts of attempted first- degree intentional homicide, resisting arrest, and possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

Wardell, a former salvage yard employee, was accused of wounding two officers and firing at a third Feb. 16 as they searched for stolen car parts. They were among six officers executing a search warrant at the yard.

The charges carry a maximum penalty of more than 130 years in prison.

Circuit Judge Michael Kirchman scheduled sentencing for June 22.

Woman pleads insanity in Beloit stabbing

Janesville A woman accused of stabbing another Beloit woman as they looked at wedding pictures said Friday that she was temporarily insane.

Sally Kelley entered the plea in Rock County Circuit Court to charges of first-degree intentional homicide, aggravated battery and bail-jumping.

Kelley, 53, the former wife of Beloit City Manager Daniel Kelley, is accused of trying to kill Sharlene Morello, 67, on Jan. 2.

Morello said at a previous hearing that Kelley was obsessed with her husband, Anthony, president of the Beloit Beverage Co.

Circuit Judge James P. Daley said Kelley would be examined by psychiatrists at the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics in Madison.

Arrest reports contain two references indicating Kelley had prior mental health problems. A doctor said she was taking Prozac for depression at the time of the attack.

Kelley, who is out on bail, is required to live with her parents and have 24-hour supervision. Daley agreed Kelley could drive herself to therapy sessions in Madison.

The trial is set to start Sept. 25. The case was moved here because of the Kelleys' social ties to the judges in Beloit. Ashland firm accused of harassing employees

Madison The National Labor Relations Board requested on Friday an injunction against an Ashland plumbing and heating firm to prohibit harassment of employees for joining a union.

The petition filed in Federal Court alleges that Kenneth and Joanne Kontny, owners of Tri- State Mechanical, Inc. have given raises to those opposing the union and threatened to fire employees supporting it.

On Oct. 15, 12 employees voted to join the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union Local 11. But Kenneth Kontny has refused to recognize it as a bargaining unit or meet with union representatives, the petition says.

Kontny has threatened to close his business before signing a contract with the employees, the petition says.

The NLRB investigated Tri- State after receiving complaints in January from unions for plumbers and sheet metal workers, the petition says.

An attorney for the Kontnys denied all allegations in the petition Friday and declined further comment.
