WAUPACA — A 24-year-old Clintonville man charged with causing the death of his infant daughter in a fit of rage will be examined by psychiatrists.
Chad R. Sprenger, N11506 Jepson Road, has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to the charge of first-degree intentional homicide, two counts of child abuse and two counts of aggravated battery.
Sprenger’s daughter, 9-month-old Alexis Sprenger, died March 31 of a skull fracture caused when he allegedly threw her to a hardwood floor March 26 in their Clintonville home. Sprenger allegedly told police he acted out of frustration over the child’s crying.
At a hearing Friday in Waupaca County Circuit Court, Judge John Hoffmann chose a psychiatrist from the Brown County Mental Institute to examine Sprenger on behalf of the court to see if Sprenger has the ability “to appreciate the wrongfulness of his actions.”
Hoffmann ordered that the exam be carried out by July 11, in time for Sprenger’s next scheduled court appearance July 12.
Waupaca County Assistant Dist. Atty. Vicki Taggatz said the state will hire a separate psychiatrist to examine Sprenger.
According to court records, Sprenger was taking medication for depression at the time of the child’s death. He attempted suicide by cutting himself shortly after he was jailed.
Sprenger remains in the Waupaca County Jail under a $200,000 cash bond.
