Suicidal Iraq War Vet Holds Howell Police At Bay For Nine Hours

July 24, 2009

7/24/09 - A suicidal veteran who held Howell Police at bay for more than nine hours Thursday night into early this morning is hospitalized and undergoing psychiatric evaluation. Howell Police Chief George Basar says that just before 6 o’clock last night they were called out to a home in the Hometown Trailer Park after the sister of a 34 year old Iraqi War veteran said he had taken an overdose of Paxil and Zanex and had armed himself with a high-powered rifle. The sister told police he wanted to kill himself and threatened to shoot at police if he saw them. Officers immediately secured the area around the home on Marquette Street and set up a perimeter, while evacuating nearby homes. Approximately 30 residents were sheltered for the night in the development’s clubhouse with the Livingston County Chapter of the American Red Cross providing supplies and other necessities. Initial attempts at communication failed, prompting authorities to bring in the Special Tactics Unit of the Livingston County Sheriff’s Department. A negotiation was conducted through the evening with multiple attempts at coaxing the man out failing. Finally at about 3:30 this morning, gas was introduced into the home and the man taken into custody without further incident. He was taken to St. Joseph Mercy Livingston Hospital for treatment and evaluation. (JK)
