56yo woman on stealing charges

30th March 2010

A WOMAN who was hit by a car while cycling in Hervey Bay last week has appeared in court on stealing charges.

Susan Lynette Hedegaard loudly sobbed while sitting in the dock of Hervey Bay Magistrates Court yesterday.

She had been in police custody since Friday morning when she was arrested.

She appeared in court yesterday on three counts of stealing.

Defence solicitor Kellie Grainger said Hedegaard was “not herself” on Friday because she'd been prescribed morphine at the hospital following her bike crash.

The 56-year-old was cycling at Torquay Road, Scarness, on Wednesday when she was struck by a Toyota Camry about 9.15am.

She was taken to hospital suffering bruised ribs and a cut to the head.

The morphine conflicted with medication Hedegaard was already taking for depression, Ms Grainger said.

Hedegaard applied for bail but magistrate Graeme Tatnell rejected the request.

“As you can see... she's extremely distressed by the four days spent in custody,” Ms Grainger said before adding that the brief taste of custody could serve as a deterrent for her client.

“She's always got an excuse, Ms Grainger,” Mr Tatnell said.

He told Hedegaard that she'd been told “25 times” not to commit such offences. She will reappear in court on Thursday.
