Mother hanged herself after moving house

A MOTHER who was in low spirits after moving house was found by her husband hanging from her loft hatch two days before her 64th birthday, an inquest heard.

Annie Knight was known to have been anxious about her move to Trent Close in Great Haywood and had been described antidepressants by her GP in November 2010, Cannock Coroner’s Court heard on Friday.

Mrs Knight had previously lived with her husband Michael in Spain for six months of the year, but after he suffered an injury the couple felt they should have a permanent home in England. They had been staying with their daughter in Stafford and put their names on a housing list, before being allocated the Trent Close house.

Coroner’s Officer Howard Carter, giving evidence, said: “It is fair to say she didn’t take to the address and told everyone of her despondence for it. When her GP saw her last she seemed to be accepting the move.”

Mrs Knight, 63, had been referred by her GP to a local support group.

But on March 8 this year Mr Knight returned home shortly before 3pm from visiting his mother in Haughton to find her hanging. She had used an electrical cord, PC Richard Borgman, who attended the scene, said.

Mr Knight had spoken to her on the phone that morning on his way to Haughton but when he called back at 2.25pm got no reply, the inquest was told.

Paramedics attended the house but nothing could be done to save Mrs Knight and she was pronounced dead at the scene at 3.32pm.

Toxicology tests no traces of alcohol or drugs in Mrs Knight’s body at the time of her death. But a note found on her kitchen table was considered to be a farewell note, PC Borgman said.

South Staffordshire Coroner Andrew Haigh recorded a verdict of suicide.
