MAN ALLEGEDLY BARRICADED HIMSELF IN ODELL BEDROOM

ODELL - A 28-year-old Carol Stream man was charged Monday in Livingston County Circuit Court with threatening police officers with a claw hammer and barricading himself Sunday in the bedroom of an Odell residence.

Jonathan M. Kilpatrick remained in the Livingston County Jail Monday night in lieu of a $500 cash bond on charges of aggravated assault and resisting a peace officer. He is scheduled to appear at an Aug. 22 arraignment in Livingston County and also is being held on a Peoria County warrant charging him with a probation violation.

The incident began at 5:39 p.m. Saturday when authorities received a report of a woman screaming for assistance in the 400 block of North Spencer Street in Odell, according to Livingston County sheriff's police.

After arriving at the residence, authorities learned Kilpatrick was inside refusing to leave, and a computer check revealed he was wanted on the Peoria County warrant. Police said the residence was owned by Kilpatrick's mother, but her name was not available.

When officers attempted to take him into custody, Kilpatrick allegedly threatened four deputies with a claw hammer, police said, and barricaded himself in an upstairs bedroom by placing furniture in front of a door.

Police said information learned from relatives indicated Kilpatrick was on medication for depression , had threatened suicide and had been drinking alcohol throughout the day.

Kilpatrick refused to respond to commands to give himself up. At 6:30 p.m., the Livingston County Emergency Response Unit, which includes officers from the sheriff's department and Pontiac and Dwight police, was activated.

In the meantime, a crisis interventionist from the Institute for Human Resources in Pontiac spent 30 minutes attempting to talk with Kilpatrick, but he remained unresponsive, police said.

A decision to enter the bedroom forcefully was made because of growing concerns the combination of prescription medications and alcohol could become life threatening to Kilpatrick, police said.

At 8:20 p.m., the emergency response team entered the bedroom and took Kilpatrick into custody after a brief struggle, police said, adding no one was injured during the arrest.

Kilpatrick was admitted to OSF Saint James Hospital in Pontiac overnight, but was released about 3:30 p.m. Sunday and transferred to the jail.
