A woman accused of fatally mowing down two teens in her SUV may have been impaired after taking three different medications, according to preliminary results of a toxicology test.

Sandra Maul, 64, allegedly lost control of her white Jeep Cherokee and struck Nhan Nguyen and Jesse Aguirre near West Colorado Avenue and Federal Boulevard on Nov. 17.

Nguyen and Aguirre, 14-year-old freshmen, were walking home from Abraham Lincoln High School.

Early results of a urine sample showed Maul had meprobamate, fluoxetine and tramadol in her system on the day of the accident, according to a search warrant affidavit.

The combination of a central nervous system depressant, an antidepressant and a pain drug likely would impair a driver's ability to operate a vehicle safely, state Toxicology Program Manager Cindy Burbach told police, the affidavit said.

Maul also does not remember if she took Ambien before she struck the teens, according to the affidavit. Ambien is used as a sleep aid.

Maul remains hospitalized and could not be reached for comment. She suffered a broken ankle and facial lacerations from the accident.

Charges have not been filed against Maul, said Lynn Kimbrough, Denver district attorney's spokeswoman.
