Steven Wright murder trial: Wright was treated for depression and anxiety

BRIDGETON – The second day of the murder trial of Steven Wright, the Pittsgove Township man accused in the 2005 shooting death of 37-year-old Carol Ann Bradford, revealed that the last time the victim had filled a prescription for Wright had been more than a year before the fatal incident.

Kevin Little, of Franklinville, a witness for the prosecution, stated he had been Bradford’s partner and fellow pharmacist at the Vineland ShopRite where Bradford would later be killed on Sept. 20, 2005. The two had work together for approximately four years, he said.

“I knew Steven Wright as a patient and customer (at the pharmacy),” said Little, under questioning from Cumberland County Assistant Prosecutor John Reilly, who is representing the state. “He would come in to drop off is prescription and pick it up 15 minutes later, but that was (the extent of it).”

According to Little, reading from pharmacy records obtained by police through a warrant, Bradford had last filled a prescription for Wright on July 26, 2004.

However, under cross examination from Wright’s attorney Louis Shapiro, Little admitted that even if one pharmacist had filled the prescription, another could hand it over to a customer.

Shapiro also asked Little about Wright’s prescription history, dating from April 1999 and August 2005. Between that time, according to Little, Wright had filled prescriptions for a variety of drugs for anxiety and depression including anatryptyline, lorazepam, a pain medication called Zoltram and its generic counterpart tramadol, Xanax and Zoloft.

Both the defense and prosecution agree Wright pulled the trigger that fired 10 shot into Bradford inside the ShopRite in September 2005. However, the defense is arguing an insanity defense, citing a history of anxiety, depression, obsession and delusions.

The prosecution is arguing the accused knew what he was doing, and that it was wrong, citing verbal statements and journal entries from Wright that he had planned the shooting months in advance.

The trial is scheduled to continue throughout the day.
