Tragedy of ‘low suicide risk’

Sep 6 2008 by Carl Butler, Daily Post

A FATHER considered by doctors to be a low suicide risk shot himself in the head.

Raymond Charles Parry, 54, of Pen y Gaer Road, Garth, near Llangollen, was trying to wean himself off the anti-depressant Mirtazapine, an inquest in Wrexham was told.

His body was found by neighbour Ian Macinnes on March 3 after he saw a pool of blood on the Parrys’ driveway, coming from a horsebox.

Mr Parry’s wife Gillian told the inquest that he had been to the doctor’s a number of times and was referred to psychiatrists at First Access.

She said: “He told me he told the meeting he would never harm himself because he thought too much of his family.”

She added that the last time he had seen a doctor was the Friday before he died when his GP had told him there was nothing more they could do for him.

He had told doctors he wouldn’t consider hurting himself and they decided he was at low risk of suicide, but advised him that help was always available.

Mr Parry, who had two daughters in their late teens, shot himself with a gun for which he had a licence.

A post mortem showed that 1.4mg of the anti-depressant was in his blood, 0.4mg over the toxic level.

Mrs Parry said: “He was meticulous about his medication and always very fussy about taking his tablets at the right time.

“As soon as he started taking them he regretted it. One of his main aims was to come off them.”

Deputy coroner for north east Wales, John Gittins, recorded a verdict of suicide.
