Summary:

Paragraph three reads:  "Gunson also said tests also show he had taken Bupropion, also known as Wellbutrin or Zyban, an antidepressant for which he had a legal prescription. Grahn apparently did not exceed the prescribed dosages."

SSRI Stories Note:  The Physicians Desk Reference states that
antidepressants can cause a craving for alcohol and alcohol abuse.  Also, the liver cannot metabolize the antidepressant and the alcohol simultaneously,  thus leading to higher levels of both alcohol and the antidepressant in the human body.

An off-duty Clackamas County sheriff's sergeant was intoxicated when he committed a Feb. 12 triple murder-suicide at a Gresham night club, according to a toxicology report.

Dr. Karen Gunson, state medical examiner, said tests show Sgt. Jeffrey A. Grahn's blood-alcohol level was .10 percent -- above Oregon's .08 percent limit for driving.

Gunson also said tests also show he had taken Bupropion, also known as Wellbutrin or Zyban, an antidepressant for which he had a legal prescription. Grahn apparently did not exceed the prescribed dosages.

"It was all well within therapeutic range, even a little low," Gunson said.

Bupropion carries a warning against use by those who have suicidal thoughts. The drug manufacturers also suggest avoiding alcohol while taking the medication, saying it could increase the risk of seizures.

On the night of Feb. 12, Grahn, 46, drove to Gresham's M&M Restaurant & Lounge and confronted his wife, who was sitting with friends. Grahn and his wife then went outside, where he fatally shot her. Moments later, police said, he re-entered and shot two of his wife's friends before going back outside and shooting himself.

Grahn, his wife, Charlotte M. "Char" Grahn, 47, of Boring, Kathleen "Katie" Hoffmeister, 53, of Gresham and Victoria "Vickie" Schulmerich, 53, of Gresham, all died of gunshot wounds to the head, autopsies say.
