An Ontario woman beat her son to death with a hammer before killing herself Friday, police said.
Ontario police found Libia Lopez, 41, and her son, Eddie Lopez, 10, at their home in the 900 block of East Rosewood Court at 7:52 p.m., after a neighbor called police about a possible dead body there.
Police said it appears Lopez bludgeoned her son with a hammer, then tried to overdose on anti-depressant pills and finally used a knife to cut her own throat. A hammer and knife were recovered at the scene, Sgt. David McBride said.
No motive has been determined, though police said they believe the incident was planned by the mother. Police originally said Lopez and her son were due to be evicted from the converted shed where they lived, and that may have led to the killings, but McBride said Saturday that subsequent interviews suggest that may not be the case.
A neighbor pointed out the address with a shed in the backyard where police had been Friday night but said he didn't know Lopez. No one answered the door Saturday afternoon at the front house, which McBride said is vacant.
