'Caveman' thug jailed by judge

A judge branded a thug a caveman after he dragged his former partner from a house by her hair.

Judge Richard Lowden said the behaviour of Paul Jones was prehistoric and sentenced him to eight months in prison.
Durham Crown Court heard that Jones had a "short but intense" relationship with his victim after the pair met at work.

David Wilkinson, prosecuting, said: "It was she who brought the relationship to an end.

"On the night she was attacked, she had been out with friends in Sunderland and afterwards she agreed to go to the home in South Hetton of another colleague.

"Mr Jones was invited separately."

The court heard the woman turned up at the house at about 2am.

"The three people had a drink and all was amicable to begin with," added Mr Wilkinson.

"Mr Jones quizzed her about another man he thought she was seeing and an argument started."

The court heard Jones punched his former partner in the face several times and hit the other man when he tried to intervene.

Jones dragged her outside by her hair and kicked her in the ribs.

Mr Wilkinson added: "When police arrived, he took up the stance of a boxer and there was a struggle as the officers tried to subdue him.

"He was arrested after a police officer used his pepper spray and managed to get the handcuffs on him."

Jones 31, of Quarry House, East Rainton, admitted assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and two charges of assaulting a police officer on July 20.

Stephen Constantine, defending, said: "Mr Jones was bullied as a child and was already on medication for depression by the time he was 16.

"He has difficulties dealing with relationships but has expressed a willingness to change.

"None of his victims suffered serious injury, although that was more by good luck than good management."

Judge Richard Lowden jailed Jones for eight months and told him: "This was a violent and protracted assault on a young woman.

"In carrying out this offence, you descended almost to caveman behaviour.

"You may have had a difficult upbringing, but you know what's right and what's wrong."
