BELVIDERE | A suicidal man tried to stab his mother after she blocked in his pickup truck to prevent him from leaving their Oxford Street home early Thursday morning, town police Chief Kent Sweigert said.
An off-duty police officer out for a walk heard the commotion and took the man, identified as 22-year-old Raymond Boyle Jr., into custody.

Boyle, of the 600 block of Oxford Street, allegedly threatened to stab his mother in the heart with a 6-inch hunting knife, pushed her to the floor and tried to stab her with a paring knife, police said.
He told his mother he would kill her so no one could stop him from killing himself, police said.
The victim earlier parked behind Boyle's pickup truck to prevent him from driving while under the influence of what police described as four beers and about 15 antidepressant tablets.
After the alleged assault, Boyle rammed his mother's vehicle with his pickup in trying to drive away.
The sound of the crash caught the attention of off-duty Oxford Township patrolman Chris Malcolm, who was out for a walk at the time of the 1 a.m. incident, police said.
Malcolm retrieved the suspect's keys, and Boyle was arrested by Malcolm and Belvidere patrolman Matthew Scott.
Boyle is charged with aggravated assault, terroristic threats, possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, drunken driving and possession of an alcoholic beverage in a motor vehicle.
He was lodged in Warren County jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.
Police said Boyle's sister was present during the alleged attack. The family moved to Belvidere about three weeks ago.
"The mother said they had never seen the son in a rage like this," Sweigert said.
She was uninjured, but was transported to Warren Hospital in Phillipsburg as a precaution, police said.
Boyle was also transported to the hospital, where he was treated and later transported to the jail, police said.
