FORT WORTH -- A woman was fatally shot by police Monday night after she came at an officer with scissors, officials say.

Stacey Burris, 46, was taken to John Peter Smith Hospital and was pronounced dead at 8:32 p.m. from multiple gunshot wounds to the chest.

"She didn't deserve this," her mother, Sandy Burris, said Tuesday. "It should never have happened."

Sandy Burris was at the house when the shooting occurred, but she declined to discuss the incident on the advice of the family's attorney.

According to Sgt. Pedro Criado, a police spokesman, officers were dispatched to a suicidal-person call in the 1300 block of Country Manor Road shortly before 8 p.m.

There, a relative told officer B.A. Lane that Stacey Burris was threatening to harm herself and relatives, Criado said. Lane entered the house and was walking down a short, narrow hallway toward the woman's room when he encountered her standing in the doorway, threatening to stab herself in the throat with a large pair of scissors, he said.

"He kept ordering her to drop them, obviously to no avail," Criado said.

Criado said a second officer had arrived in the hallway when Burris "suddenly lowered the large pair of scissors toward the first officer and came toward the officer."

Criado said Lane fired his weapon multiple times at the woman. Simultaneously, the assisting officer, J. Duran, fired his Taser, he said.

Lane was commissioned as a police officer in January 2010 and Duran in 2001, Criado said. He said the department's major-crimes unit is investigating the incident.

Burris said her daughter was divorced with two grown daughters and was disabled. She said her daughter was on medication for several health issues, including diabetes, a ruptured disk and depression.
