A YOUNG Cambridge woman killed herself by driving headlong into the path of a large truck, an inquest heard yesterday.
Kay Bunday, 26, told her close friend Lisa Cutting her intentions during a mobile phone conversation which stopped only at the point the car and truck collided.
It happened on the A1307 Linton bypass on February 17 after Kay, an emergency medical technician, deliberately moved in to the right hand lane of the road while travelling at speeds of up to 63 mph.
It is believed the driver of the truck was travelling at 45 mph.
The inquest, at Cambridge's Shire Hall, was told that the impact of the crash had been so intense that Kay's Volkswagen Golf became wedged underneath and in the front of the truck and was pushed several metres along the road and onto the grass verge.
There was evidence Kay had removed her seatbelt prior to the crash in a bid to ensure the impact proved fatal and crash investigators found no evidence she had tried to brake or avoid the collision.
Lisa Cutting, the good friend with whom Kay shared her last moments, broke down in tears as she told the inquest she had been the last person to speak to Kay.
A male friend visited by Kay half an hour before she died said he had been "worried for her well-being and safety" after she told him her intention to take her own life.

The inquest also heard that during her university years she had been depressed after a boyfriend was killed in a crash.
Coroner for South and West Cambridgeshire David Morris recorded the verdict that Kay killed herself.
He said Kay deliberately drove onto the other side of the road and added: "She had been expressing suicidal thoughts and had also indicated what she was going to do.
"The driver of the truck could do nothing about it."
