OCEANSIDE: Death of woman found in car ruled suicide

About a half-hour after an argument with her fiance, recently unemployed social worker Kim Marie Barrett, 38, of Oceanside, bought some over-the-counter sleeping pills, according to a medical examiner's report released Tuesday.

She swallowed the pills with four small bottles of white wine, then folded down the back seat of her locked car and curled up in the trunk, where police found her dead July 26.

The medical examiner's report ruled her death a suicide, caused by diphenhydramine and alcohol intoxication.

Barrett's fiance, Christopher Geirman, last saw Barrett at about 9 p.m. July 25, when he locked her out of the house after a heated argument, according to the autopsy report. The report said she left the property, and the couple exchanged text messages for the next couple of hours, the last of which Barrett sent between 10:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.

The message said, "this will be my last text, I love you forever," according to the report.

When Geirman awakened about 8:30 a.m. July 26, Barrett had not returned home, according to the report. Geirman called Barrett, according to the report, but she did not pick up her phone or return his calls.

Worried, Geirman called Barrett's son, Gianni Krakoffand, and other relatives, hoping to find her. None of the relatives had had contact with Barrett beyond a Facebook message she sent to family members around midnight, which read, "love you and peace out," according to the report.

Geirman reported Barrett missing at 11:20 a.m., police said, and then began driving around the neighborhood looking for her, according to the report. Geirman called police again around 2 p.m. to say he had found her silver sedan parked in the 700 block of Mission Gate Drive, about 10 blocks from their home.

When police joined Geirman at the car, they found a bag on the passenger side floorboard that held four empty bottles of white zinfandel wine and prescription medications, including the antidepressant sertraline, and lovastatin, a drug prescribed to lower cholesterol, according to the report.

On the passenger seat, police found empty bottles of an over-the-counter sleeping pill called Unisom and receipts that indicated they were bought in two separate transactions the previous night at 7:27 p.m. and 9:29 p.m., according to the report.

The report did not say how many bottles of Unisom were found in the car.

It seemed that Barrett had folded down the back seat of the car to get into the trunk, as the seat was not fully closed when police inspected the car, the report said.

The report said a dead cellular phone and laptop computer also were found in the rear of the car.

Barrett had a history of depression and had been recently fired from her job as a social worker at Casa de Amparo, a home for abused children in Oceanside, according to the report. It appeared that she had sought legal action against the home for wrongful termination, the report said.
