Grand Rapids, November 3, 2004, 12:28 p.m.) A federal magistrate has ordered a psychiatric exam for a West Michigan man who police say threatened the life of Vice President Dick Cheney.

Fifty-one year old Homer Shoup of Wayland made an emergency call to Michigan State Police Friday around the time he dropped off a camera bag at WOOD TV8 in Grand Rapids.

Shoup said he had turned his van into a bomb and was going to Lansing to blow up Cheney who was at a campaign stop at the time.

After making that call to police, Shoup apparently stopped at a downtown Grand Rapids brew pub for a couple of beers. He was arrested in his parked van across the street.

According to testimony at his preliminary hearing in federal court Wednesday, police found a half dozen empty beer containers in the van.

Shoup's attorney says his client was recently released from Pine Rest Christian Mental Health Services, suffers from chronic depression and had stopped taking medication.

After his arrest, Shoup reportedly told police he intended to commit suicide by setting himself on fire inside his van in the hope he could detonate a propane tank he had with him.
