Child found safe after brief search

Newport, Ark. -

Local authorities narrowly escaped what could have been a "bad situation" according to Newport Police Chief Michael Scudder after it was determined that a child suspected to be missing was found.
According to a report filed by Newport Police Officer Chris McClellan, Lora Leigh Blevins, 29, of Swifton, the mother of a two year old girl, reported that her child was missing from the parking lot at Kroger. A witness at the scene reported they had seen a small child walking on Malcolm Avenue in front of Kroger.
McClellan took immediate action and relayed the description of the child and what she was wearing to other officers and a search began. Volunteers from the community and businesses responded to the staging area in the parking lot of Village Mall as well as the Newport Fire Department, Jackson County Sheriff's Department, Arkansas State Police and Newport Police Department to assist in the search. Local pilot Malcolm Haigwood flew overhead to look for signs of the toddler in the area as well.
After an hour of searching for the child, it was determined that she was at her grandmother's house along with her other sister.
"Lora stated to me, after we located [the child] that she had forgot she dropped [her] at her mother's house before she came to Kroger," McClellan said.
The officer reported that Blevins had taken a pain reliever, Lorcet, and Prozac earlier in the day and did appear under the influence of her medication.
After speaking with Blevins, the officer interviewed a witness who reported she had almost hit a child on Malcolm Avenue in front of Kroger as she was turning into the parking lot. This child was the five year old daughter of Blevins who had ridden to the store with her mother.
The case was turned over to the Arkansas State Police Crimes Against Children Division for investigation.
