Swing Rope Used To Take Own Life
A COLNE man who was found hanged in his garden was the subject of a police inquiry, an inquest heard.
East Lancashire Coroner Mr Richard Taylor recorded a verdict that Gary Ronald Wynne (42), of Ruskin Avenue, killed himself.
Mr Taylor had adjourned an earlier hearing for further inquiries. Former bus driver Mr Wynne was found dead on September 27th last year by his wife Angela. He had been suffering from depression and was on medication.
Angela Wynne told the hearing in Burnley that she had been married to Mr Wynne for 11 years.
He had left his job as a bus driver in June last year due to stress, and was given anti-depressants by his doctor.
On September 26th, she was informed that the police wanted to interview Mr Wynne. She did not say why.
She said: "He went out for a drink and I dropped him off at the club he went to."
He came home around 1 a.m. Mr Taylor asked Mrs Wynne: "How was he when he came home?" She replied: "Upset.... confused.... he had had a lot to drink."
She said she had a lengthy talk to him, and went to bed at 2-45 a.m., leaving him up. She woke up at 5 a.m. and spotted him in the garden, but didn't think anything about it because he often went there when he could not sleep.
However, she woke up at 8 a.m. and saw him hanging from a tree. A rope from a swing was round his neck. He had never suggested he would take his life, she added.
Pathologist Dr Abdul Al-Dawoud, who carried out a post mortem examination, said there was nothing to suggest he had died from natural causes. Toxicology tests showed he had drunk the equivalent of double the drink-driving limit, and had taken a small amount of paracetamol 48 hours earlier. He said death was due to hanging.
Mr Taylor said he was clearly suffering from depression and added: "There was a police investigation which significantly distressed him."
He added that putting a rope round his neck was a deliberate act. "I cannot conceive any other intention than to end his life."
