Murder Attempt Antidepressant 2011-01-25 Oregon Man Shoots Cop: Terrorizes Neighborhood: Cop in Critical Condition
Summary:

Paragraph nine reads:  "Durham is from the Sauvie Island area and KATU Reporter Susan Harding spent the day there talking to the man's close friends. They said Durham has always been a regular Joe kind of guy but that something changed in the past two weeks. They said he suddenly seemed depressed, was paranoid about the cops and FBI being after him and appeared to be delusional. Friends said Durham had also recently started talking about taking anti-depressants."

SSRI Stories note:  This case was not found on Google News Advanced Search, where all the cases for SSRI Stories are found, but was sent to SSRI stories by a person who heard the first T.V. newscast, which has since been taken down, that said the man was taking antidepressants [not talking about taking antidepressants] .

The sudden drop-off in news stories involving antidepressants and violence [from an average of 70 per month to about 14 per month for SSRI Stories] coincidentally took place at just the time, December 15, 2010, when the PLoS Journal Article was released to the public. This article said that Prozac was listed as the number 2 drug and Paxil the number 3 drug causing violence. [Chantix, the smoking cessation drug, was listed as number 1].  The top  31 medications listed for violence included mostly SSRI antidepressants and SNRI antidepressants.

WALDPORT, Ore. - Police say the owner of a truck involved in the shooting of a Lincoln City police officer is likely the suspect at the center of their manhunt.

Investigators said early Monday that they were releasing 43-year-old David Anthony Durham's name and DMV photograph to "help obtain information that will confirm he is safe and to be able to interview him to learn if he has information to help identify and locate the suspect in this investigation."

By late Monday, though, police said that Durham is likely the suspect they are looking for.

"We're looking at him fairly strongly right now," Chief Mark Miranda with the Newport Police Department said during an afternoon press conference.

The chief also wanted the public to know that if they see Durham to not approach him and instead call 911 immediately.

"What would happen then is that armored vehicles and SWAT members would arrive to make contact with him," Chief Miranda said.

Police believe Durham is hiding in Waldport's Bayshore Resort area where there were sightings of someone fitting his description. Police shut down all schools in Waldport as they searched the town.Investigators believe Durham likely has his dog 'Huckleberry' with him. The dog is a salt-and-pepper colored Blue Healer Australian cattle dog that weighs about 40 pounds.

The photo of the dog (seen at right) was released to the media by the Lincoln City Police Department.

About David Anthony Durham

Durham is from the Sauvie Island area and KATU Reporter Susan Harding spent the day there talking to the man's close friends. They said Durham has always been a regular Joe kind of guy but that something changed in the past two weeks. They said he suddenly seemed depressed, was paranoid about the cops and FBI being after him and appeared to be delusional. Friends said Durham had also recently started talking about taking anti-depressants.

Durham worked at Willamette Blueprint and did not show up for work on Friday, causing more concern about what was going on with him.

A neighbor said Durham owned a couple of guns and would occasionally go target shooting but he never seemed aggressive in any way.

An unmarked car with two officers stood vigil outside Durham's house all day on Monday. Crime tape was also stretched across Durham's porch.

How it all Started

The incident that prompted the manhunt happened late Sunday evening when Officer Steven Dodds with the Lincoln City Police Department pulled over a Dodge truck for speeding about 40 miles north of Waldport.

Officer Dodds was shot multiple times during the traffic stop and although he was unable to return fire, he did manage to call in his own officer down report, according to Lt. Jerry Palmer with the Lincoln City Police Department.

The gunman drove south on U.S. 101 and was spotted and chased by Newport police, with several shots fired at officers. None were hit, but two patrol vehicles and a car were struck by bullets, according to Lt. Gregg Hastings, a state police spokesman.

The Dodge truck (seen at right) was stopped by spike strips on the highway at Waldport, where the driver fled on foot into a wooded area. The gunman also shot at a crab fisherman on a boat in Alsea Bay, near the bridge, Newport Police Chief Mark Miranda said. The fisherman was struck by shrapnel but was not seriously injured.

About 30 officers took part in the manhunt overnight. Police alerted residents through a reverse 911 system and advised them to report anyone suspicious but did not order an evacuation. U.S. 101 was reopened shortly after 8 a.m. Monday but access to streets around the bridge was restricted, with electronic signs advising motorists about the search.

Soul Vacation resort, located near the bridge, hired extra security guards and put employees and construction workers doing renovations on alert, said Guru Murumi, who oversees wellness programs at the yoga resort. They also checked empty rooms and notified guests.

Officer Steven Dodds, 45, is a six-year veteran of the Lincoln City Police Department and was the agency's Officer of the Year in 2010.

Dodds was flown to Legacy Emanuel Hospital in Portland where he is reportedly in critical condition. His family and fellow officers are at the hospital, police said.

Dodds is not married but he is a father - he has a daughter who is 18 years old.

Lt. Jerry Palmer with the Lincoln City Police Department called Dodds an outstanding officer who is well-trained and experienced.

"Steve is one of those guys you wish you could clone," Palmer said at the hospital.

Officer Tracy Burt of the Port of Portland Police Department, a childhood friend of Dodds, said Dodds had grown up on the Oregon coast and lived with Burt's family during high school.

"He's like a brother," Burt said, saying the shooting left him "with just a burning pit in my stomach."

Colleagues also said Dodds is the kind of officer who would try to fix a problem with a warning or a kind word, which makes it especially hard for them to hear that he had been shot.
