CS gas used to stop suicide bid

Published Date: 20 August 2009

A MAN who threatened to jump from the top of a viaduct in the middle of Buxton had a kitchen knife with him, a court heard.

Matthew Ollerenshaw, who admitted having possession of a knife in a public place without good reason or lawful authority, appeared before High Peak magistrates for sentencing on Monday.

They were told police negotiators spent an hour and a half talking to Ollerenshaw, after he himself had called emergency services at 6pm.

Worse for drink, he told police he wanted to jump.

Becky Mahon, prosecuting, said just before 7.30pm Ollerenshaw began to walk a short distance away towards where an officer with a police dog were hiding behind bushes.

The defendant was told to drop the knife but refused and pointed it at his own stomach before cutting himself on his left arm twice, said Ms Mahon.

High Peak magistrates heard that officers then CS gas was used and he was arrested.

Annis Rowlands, defending, said: "This defendant was in an intoxicated and distressed state and has a limited recollection of events."

"He had had more than two bottles of wine," said Ms Rowlands. "He is not a regular drinker and had no idea why he took the knife with him."

He had a history of depression and had been prescribed anti depressants two and a half months before the incident.

"He has moved addresses and his relationship with his partner is on good terms. He has been referred for counselling by his GP."

Ollerenshaw was due to start a college course: "He still has his whole life ahead of him."

Magistrates made Ollerenshaw, of Montpelier Place, subject to a 12 month community order with 12 months' supervision and 120 hours' unpaid work.

Chairman of the bench Helen Thatcher said: " We have taken into account that you didn't use the knife to threaten other people and instead were threatening suicide yourself and intended to use the knife on yourself .

Ollerenshaw was ordered to pay £60 costs.
