The date for the continuation of the trial of former Cobourg councillor and lawyer David Purvis is still uncertain.

Mr. Purvis went to trial in the Ontario Court of Justice in Port Hope on May 16 on charges of dangerous driving and breach of a bail condition, stemming from his operation of a motor vehicle on January 25, 2007.

Witnesses testified that, while westbound on County Road 2, his vehicle repeatedly shifted into the oncoming lane -- at one point, crossing that lane completely, hitting a snowbank against a guardrail on the south side of the road and forcing oncoming traffic to manoeuvre between him and the other vehicles in the westbound lane.

Mr. Purvis blamed a new depression medication for his driving. Crown attorney David Thompson announced his intention to call a toxicologist to testify, and excoriated defence counsel David Besant for not having Mr. Purvis's doctor available.

Mr. Besant was not present in the Ontario Court of Justice in Cobourg June 16 to address the issue of a return date, so the matter was remanded to Port Hope court this Friday, June 20.
